Co-op

Cooperative education (co-op) is the practice of alternating students' studies with paid, professional work related to their major. The Biomedical Engineering co-op program allows students to work at positions in device development companies as well as in hospital- and University-based labs and in R&D and manufacturing departments in private industry. The co-op schedule switches between classes at the university and education through industry employment.

The Professional Practice Program of the University of Cincinnati is designed to provide qualified students with the most comprehensive professional preparation available. The extension of classroom and laboratory teaching by practice in a chosen profession adds a unique dimension to the student's preparation for entering the Biomedical Engineering field after graduation. In addition, the earnings from co-op assignments significantly reduce a student’s financial commitment for attending college.

For the student, co-op education:

  • Combines practical experience with academic studies, thus theory and practice are more closely integrated and students find greater meaning in their classroom experiences.
  • Provides a smoother transition into career employment due to significant prior discipline-related work experience while still a student.
  • Assists in overall maturity: development and strengthening of resourcefulness, self-confidence, self-discipline and a sense of responsibility.
  • Stimulates faculty and student research through relationships with cooperating organizations.
  • Enhances learning, frequently providing students with access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology.
  • Provides a strong basis for pursuing employment opportunities after graduation.

Today, UC's co-op program is listed among the nation's best in "US News & World Report" rankings. Read these student profiles to find out why.
